The composition of food directly affects the nature of food. Because according to the composition, the texture, consistency, color, and keeping quality of food changes. So, it is very important to study these parameters of food.

Example – Perishable foods have a high moisture content so they have low keeping quality.

To study the changes occurring in food during Preparation, Processing & Storage

During various processes of processing and storage, food gets exposed to different environments. So, there are many possibilities to occur changes in the quality of food, like it’s taste, texture, color, etc. We have to understand the different changes occurring in food by diverse methods and experiments.

Example – Milk gets convert into curd if placed in a moist open environment due to the metabolic activities of a particular microbe.

To learn and innovate the Ideal methods of food Preparation, Processing, Storage also to conserve the nutritive values of food products.

Food gets start to spoil as after its harvesting, preparation, and storage sins long ago. This knowledge of changes in food helps to develop the practices that help is to retain the nutritional values of food for as long as possible. This includes numerous methods that can be applied in processing, storage, packaging, etc.

Example – Salting is a common method used to preserve seafood and meat for a longer period.

To improve the Digestibility of Food

The main purpose of food to give us energy for our daily routine. So, food is good as it is easy to digest. From ancient times, various methods are used to food get more digestible like Fermentation, cooking, baking, roasting, etc. All these methods increase the enzymatic approach of our body towards the food.

To maintain the quality and safety of food

As per health concerns, hygiene is a very important aspect of food handling. Clean processing and storage make food more ‘Safe’ for consumers.Various government bodies take a keen watch on all these aspects.

Example – FSSAI in India  FDA in USA  EFSCS in Europe

To learn to avoid Food wastage and minimize its cost

Generally, the optimum quality of food is brought for cooking all over the world, but a lot of food gets wasted every single day. According to reports of the United Nations(UN), 14 – 20 % of food gets wasted out of the total production on a globe. We have to understand the importance of food also finding new ideas to prevent wastage and minimize the production cost of Food so it gets economical.

To understand the meaning of Food

The study of Food Sciences enables us to understand the importance of Food in our life. Food performs different functions. It just not only satisfy our hunger but also builds our body. It comes in front of us with society, culture, festivals, celebrations, and a lot more. We need food not just sociologically but physiologically also.
